Family Literacy

Our Philosophy
We teach all subject areas with a primary focus on math and literacy development. In kindergarten, we use themes throughout the year to integrate the curriculum. This allows for hands-on learning of science, social studies and health, while immersing each child in theme related literacy activities. For example, in our theme of Cooperation we study the teachings of Martin Luther King, read and compare different versions of a story demonstrating cooperation, and illustrate our dreams for peace on Friendship Wreaths. All this is intertwined with many reading, writing, and word study activities.

Our challenge is to provide the highest level of developmentally appropriate education for each learner. Every day we want all students to thrive in an environment that supports risk taking and celebrates success.

Teaching kindergarten is full of many joyous moments. Five and six year olds are excited about endless aspects of learning. It is always amazing how kindergarten builders find intricate ways of creating structures, young scientists explore minute details with tools, and emerging artists find unique ways of using materials.

Most impressive is the almost magical way kindergartners begin to see themselves as readers and writers. The sense of joy in a kindergartner when this happens is hard to put into words. There seems to be a tremendous gasp, dancing eyes, and a definite sense of “I can”.

Of course, literacy acquisition doesn’t happen in isolation. Parents play an incredible role in helping their children. Reading each night and teaching the value of education are huge steps in the process. Many parents come to school to work in the classroom. For this we are most appreciative.

Each year we want kindergartners to believe in themselves as learners and as valued members of a classroom community. While we take steps each day acquiring academic skills, equally important is the social-emotional realm of learning. We always hope to guide and nurture the seeds of learning and growing in a caring classroom community.

We believe that kindergarten is one of the most important years of school. It sets the standard in so many ways for the future. Teachers of 5 and 6 year olds truly plant the seeds for learning in our “kinder-garden”.
